This illustration depicts the defensive sequence of the large yellow underwing moth (Noctua pronuba). At rest, the moth relies on cryptic forewings for camouflage against tree bark. When disturbed by a predator, it quickly spreads its wings to expose bright yellow-orange hindwings, using a sudden flash of color to startle the threat and facilitate escape.
